Dear Engl 210,
I enrolled in this class as a requirement, but am eager to take it, nonetheless. I expect to be writing every day for the next few months, as I am taking a few writing intensive classes this semester. I look forward to it, but one thing I will need to get used to is sharing my work. I am a perfectionist and am thankful to live in an era where the backspace key exists, and I don’t have to erase on a typewriter.
I am excited to learn as a group. It is proven that skills improve with practice, and the more we write and share, the more naturally it will come. I expect my classmates to be open to learning and sharing as well, and together, I expect to grow as writers and critical thinkers.
I haven’t taken an English class in over a decade but recognize the importance of expressing oneself through words in everyday life. I expect us all to be able to exercise patience and try to come from a place of understanding, and lastly, hope to be able to develop as communicators in deciphering the world around us.
Cheers,
Rachel
Rachel, this must be quite an interesting semester for you! I have dropped out of college before and this is my first semester back, so like you I haven’t taken an English class in a really long time. I like how you’ve engaged the prompt, and thrown in a fun bit of concrete language for your readers, such as the bit about the typewriter. I also really think working in groups will be important for us, and as you say, the more we work together and share our perspectives, the better at writing and critical thinking we will become. I really enjoyed the way you formatted your letter as well, as it reads out very naturally, almost like a real letter to a friend. This makes it very engaging to read.
I look forward to working with you!
Well it seems we having something in common here. I wouldn’t call myself a perfectionist, but sharing my work can sometimes be a fear of mine when I feel like I don’t measure up with the rest of my classmates. If the current pandemic situation allows, maybe when we cross paths in class and have the opportunity we can work together to get over this fear of ours. Wishing you the best of luck throughout the semester.
